The Standerton Lions Club held their induction dinner on 2 August to introduce the new presidents of both the Lions and Willows Club, which is the women’s branch.
After the usual traditions like the Lions pledge, toast to the Republic of South Africa and the welcoming of all present, the outgoing presidents addressed the audience.
Out-going Willows president Louise Coetzee was in quite a predicament as to which language to do her address,
but she mixed it up nicely in both English and Afrikaans.
She gave feedback on her year and after thanking everyone for their support, quoted some
empowering words from Mahatma Ghandi. Then it was time for the outgoing president of the Lions Arthur Baines to address all present, who also had a dilemma and did not know if he was to speak in English or Welsh.
Fortunately for the Standerton Advertiser he chose
English because we do not have a Welsh spellchecker.
Certificates for excellence were handed out to members of the organisation for their contribution and hard work in the community. The much anticipated Lion of the Year was awarded to Les
Parkes and Arthus Baines fondly compared him to the seven dwarfs because of his mood swings, luckily grumpy stayed at home and Parkes was his happy self on the evening. Breaks were taken during the evening to enjoy a wonderfully prepared three course meal, enjoyed by all.
District Governor Dave Cousins lastly did the induction of the incoming presidents..
The president for 2014/2015 will be Graham Taylor and the Willows branch will be headed by Jo-Ann Boer.
They both then expressed their hopes and goals for the upcoming year, after which formalities came to an end and the entertainment for the evening began.
The Lions are a non-profit organisation that does good in our community, so the next time you notice a fundraising
project, know your contribution may improve the life of someone less fortunate.
