Car watchers will have to get ID tags

The Standerton Police have begun doing background checks on car guards in town.

“Some criminals pose as car guards and then target your vehicle when you do your shopping,” Lt Fanie Nhlabathi, spokesman of the Standerton Police, said.

Police are taking photos and making copies of the ID documents of guards.

All car guards will wear a photo and ID tag on them in future.

“Residents are free to request this ID tag when a car guard approaches them, if he does not produce one, he is probably not a car guard,” Lt Nhlabathi said.

Lt Nhlabathi also said the same applies when a police officer approaches you.

Identification must be produced and without it, they may not arrest you.

He urged the community to contact them if you think that someone is posing as a car guard with criminal intentions in mind.
