Hawkers organisation to address illegal trading
While hawkers are trying to make living by selling different things on the side of the roads, there is no longer any space for pedestrians to walk.
The Sisonke Hawkers Organisations wants to meet with all the hawkers in town and in the industrial area to formally introduce their organisation.
The organisation is also planning to meet with the Lekwa Municipality to discuss the issue of illegal traders.
The hawkers meeting will be held on 10 November, followed by the meeting with the municipality on 13 November, that has not been confirmed yet.
According to the municipality hawkers are suppose to trade within demarcated areas in town.
Mr Michael Ngcongo, secretary of the organisation, said when they meet with the municipality they will also talk about a suitable place for all hawkers to trade in.
He also said they will invite the police to their meeting to discuss issues regarding crime.
According to Mr Ngcongo there are illegal traders who scam consumers and get away with it.
Most hawkers trade in the Central Business District (CBD), while a few operate in other areas.
A large number of the organisation’s members are also based in town.
Many hawkers trade next to the taxi rank in Mbonani Mayisela Street, selling food, clothes and even cutting people’s hair.
They trade on the pavements, leaving no space for pedestrians to walk.
Pedestrians end up walking in the road which can cause accidents.
