Sondoni miners strike

Workers want better housing, transport and a medical aid.

KINROSS – About 200 mine workers from the Shondoni Mine between Kinross and Brendan Village striked on Monday, 5 January for better working conditions.

Representatives from Giwusa were also present.

Their contracts began in 2012 and they are from a company called the Aveng Mining Shafts and Underground Group situated in Johannesburg.

They began striking on 17 December last year, but say the mine management did not respond to their requests, such as a better working environment.

Their aim is to get allowances, better housing, transport and a medical aid.

Most of the workers are from countries such as Mozambique and Lesotho.

“We work in a dangerous environment and ask that we are taken care of,” Mr Sifiso Makhubo, representative of Giwusa, said.

A meeting between the workers and the management was held on Tuesday, 6 January.

The outcome is not yet known.
