Curro School opens its doors

Curro Secunda opened its doors on Wednesday, 14 January with 123 pupils.

SECUNDA – Curro Secunda opened its doors on Wednesday, 14 January with 123 pupils.

Mr Thinus Enslin is the executive head of this new school and has years of experience as an operational head at Curro Heuwelkruin in Polokwane.

This private school caters for children from three months old to Grade 5 pupils, as well as Grade 8 in 2015, phasing in grades yearly up to Grade 12.

Curro Castle Secunda is built to look like a castle inside and outside and is for children aged three months to five years.

It can take in 150 children and the primary section of the school can take in 500 children.

Curro Secunda only takes 25 children per class.

The school will take in Grade 6 and Grade 9 pupils from next year and for all other age groups, there are still openings.

“We did not plan to take in Grade 8 pupils this year, but on demand from the parents we took in a Grade 8 group,” said Ms Marcel Untiedt, regional marketer of Curro Schools.

According to her a few years ago, new Curro Schools usually reached the 500 mark within two years.

“This changed dramatically the past two years as parents are increasingly enrolling their children in our schools.”

This new school is currently still a Phase 1 Curro campus but Ms Untiedt and Mr Enslin believe it will reach Phase 2 within the next two years and will then be able to accommodate 1 200 pupils.

All the teachers at Curro School are qualified and registered.

Curro currently have 32 campuses across South Africa.

“People want to work at Curro Schools, we had 500 vacancies in South African and we got 23 000 applications,” said Mr Enslin.

Curro offers its pupils an enriched curriculum and focuses on excellent education.

“The curriculum at our schools are of a very high standard,” said Ms Untiedt.

“We have good discipline and a strict code of conduct for the staff and for the pupils.

“If a child’s behaviour is bad and does not improve after an invention programme, we will ask the parents to take that child out of our school.”

There is a full time nurse at Curro Castle Secunda and they also usually lay out an activity centre for the little ones.

This centre will stay open permanently and children of other schools are also welcome to visit this centre.

“The aim of this centre is to give children the opportunity to get practical life experience to buy something in a store for example,” said Ms Untiedt.

The school also offers an after care centre where the children follow a specific programme.

All the classes at Curro Castle Secunda are under camera surveillance.

The IEB matric certificate give pupils admission to study at international universities.

Curro Secunda also offer sports and cultural activities.

It is compulsory for all pupils to take part in one summer sport, one winter sport and one cultural activity.

The Gert Sibande Chess Council will be using Curro Secunda’s facilities and there is also a Ballet School at the school.

Anybody from the community is welcome to take part in the chess or ballet at Curro Secunda.

Ms Annamarie Meyer will also be giving tennis lessons at Curro Secunda.
