Secunda Cub Scouts learn about fires
It is important that children from a small age know how to prevent and act in the event of fires.
SECUNDA – The first Secunda Cub Scouts visited the Secunda Fire Station on 16 February where they learnt more about fire safety.
It is important that children from a small age know how to prevent and act in the event of fires.
Mr Douw Botha, senior station commander of the Secunda Fire Station, and his team welcomed the scouts and spent the afternoon with them, teaching them about the various ways to put out fires.
According to Ms Marisa Smith, Akela (leader of the scouts), the children and the fire station crew enjoyed it so much that they insisted on going for a second visit.
She took them again on 23 February where they were shown how fire fighters rescue people during an accident.
Mr Botha used an old vehicle door as a demo to show the scouts how the jaws of life works.
The jaws of life is a tool used by fire fighter to free people from mangled cars and burning or collapsed buildings.
The fire fighters of the Govan Mbeki Municipality are trained and know how to handle difficult situations.
If anyone is interested in joining the Scouts, they are welcome to join them on Mondays at 2.15pm at 5 Clare Street, Secunda.
“We are not active during school holidays though,” said Ms Smith.
