Van Staden Dam Primary School gets green flag

School assessed by Department of Health.

CHARL CILLIERS – Van Staden Dam Primary School was nominated as a health promoting school in the Gert Sibande District on Tuesday, 24 March.

The school opened in 1941 and was assessed by the Department of Health recently and was found to be complying with health-related issues.

Ms Gloria Malazi who represented the Department of Health, said the department checks whether health policies are in place, posters are displayed in classrooms to give pupils heath education, and whether the environment is conducive for learning as expected by the World Heath Organization (WHO) that child to child education should be implemented.

Other aspects that are also taken into consideration, is the involvement of the neighbouring community in health issues and the health of their own children.

“We are excited about today’s launch, because it shows that we are organised,” said Ms Sibongile Matlala, a teacher.

Ms Nomsa Kunene, the principal, acknowledged the help they always get from Ms Marqueoite Veldman who stays on one of the farms near the school and always takes care of their pupils.

“Ms Veldman donated school uniforms and makes donations every year,” said Ms Kunene.

Ms Johanna Ndlovu, councillor for Charl Cilliers, was also excited that the school was nominated.
