Zama-zamas arrested at Evander Gold Mine
Illegal miners stayed underground for about a month.
EVANDER – Five illegal miners were rescued and then arrested at the Evander Gold Mine on Tuesday, 2 June.
According to the police, the illegal miners illegally entered the mine on 2 May.
It is alleged that they rented access cards from mine employees.
Sgt Sibusiso Mbuli said the paramedics were called to provide first aid as the illegal miners were dehydrated.
“They were apprehended by the mine’s security guards who then called us to arrest them.
“The miners were very weak and could not stand on their own, however after treatment, we took them to the holding cells.
“According to them, they had not eaten for about 20 days and only had water to drink.”
Various incidents have happened regarding mining in the area.
In February six foreign nationals were killed during illegal mining violence.
Police have conducted various operations in attempts to eradicate the problem, however it continues.
The recent Operation Fiela focused on illegal mining.
During the operation, the police recovered various tools such as shovels, picks and a machine believed to be used for illegal mining.
Residents have also raised their concerns about their safety because of the large number of the alleged illegal miners, who usually wear the Basotho traditional attire mainly in eMbalenhle.
The Ridge Times tried several times to get comment from the Evander Gold Mine, however the attempts were in vain.
