Police recover unlicensed firearms
Police hope foreign nationals nabbed with illegal firearms and ammunition will get a harsh sentence.
The police arrested four Basotho foreign nationals for possession of illegal firearms and ammunition on different occasions recently.
In the first case, the police received a tip off that someone was in possession of an illegal firearm.
Police responded and on arrival the suspect allegedly tried to hide the firearm under a chair, however the police saw it and he was arrested.
The suspect, Mr Mohau Tladi (20), remains in custody at the Bethal Correctional Services and will appear in the Evander Magistrate’s Court on 14 July for trial.
Mssrs Pitso Tau (30) Kabelo Lebusa (31) and Lerapo Lebusa (25) were arrested for possession of two illegal firearms and ammunition.
They remain in custody and appeared in the Evander Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 29 June.
Capt Mogonseni Nkosi, police spokesman, said the police are concerned over the increase in unlicensed firearms in the area.
He thanked residents who are working with the police in the fight against crime in the area.
“Only one unlicensed firearm put many lives at risk.
“We are working hard to ensure that such crimes are reduced and urge residents to keep on reporting crime.”
Capt Nkosi commended R/Const Mandla Mtsweni for his dedication and hard work which resulted in the apprehension of the suspects.
He said R/Const Mtsweni has seven years’ service as a reservist in crime prevention and has grown in the profession.
Capt Nkosi said reservists can learn a lot from R/Const Mtsweni.
