KINROSS – Residents said their sense of safety and security has been shaken by the increase of housebreakings and theft.
Some of the cases reported indicate that criminals gained entry through windows or use keys left in doors on the inside.
Criminals use bank cards to push open window handles and windows to gain entry.
Sgt Matselane Nhlapo said people should not leave their keys in doors when they go to bed.
Residents are advised to also be part of neighbourhood watch groups and report any suspicious vehicles or people.
Sgt Nhlapo encouraged residents to write down the serial numbers of their household appliances, because it makes it easier to trace stolen goods.
Syndicates steal appliances and sell them in another town.
“Some get caught and the appliances are recovered and it is much easier for the police to identify them if the serial numbers have been registered with the police when a case of theft is opened,” he said.
Sgt Nhlapo said many recovered appliances cannot be traced to their owners because they are not marked and serial numbers were not written down.
