Rehabilitation for convicts is necessary
The Golden Champions, Bethal Correctional Services.
BETHAL – The Department of Arts and Culture recently invited the Department of Correctional Services to The Golden Champions event at the Secunda Stadium.
It was held for senior citizens who played games and did exercises.
The purpose was to help the elderly age actively, to release stress and for enjoyment.
The Golden Champions began in Australia and was introduced in South Africa in 2005.
According to a member of the Correctional Services, the purpose for partnering with the Department of Arts and Culture was to involve parolees and probationers to assist in the event.
“The aim to have a relationship with Arts and Culture, was for them to assist our parolees and probationers to develop their talents by involving them in community projects and to prevent them from committing crime and re-offending after they have been released.”
It also acted as a crime prevention programme and for the parolees to be accepted by the community and it is part of their rehabilitation process while they are still in prison.
The goal of the Department of Correctional Services is to rehabilitate offenders by identifying their needs and nurture their talents through arts and culture.
