Benefactor donates wheelchair

A local benefactor donated a wheelchair to Mr Edwin Petzer.

Mr Graham McCarthy, a businessman from Standerton, donated a wheelchair to Mr Edwin Petzer.

Mr Petzer’s foot was amputated after he was involved in a motorbike accident on 30 May.

His right foot and ankle were completely smashed and the right leg, up to the ankle, had to be removed as well.

Mr Petzer was still in the Standerton Hospital on 6 August to undergo an operation where the stitches would be removed and the leg treated for infection.

According to his wife, Ms Rene Petzer, it went well, but he will be in isolation for two weeks.

The Glaziar Riders Club organised a Day of Amputees on 1 August to raise funds for the unemployed Mr Petzer.

The event aimed at raising awareness about motorbike accidents.

Mr Petzer is on the waiting list at the hospital for a wheelchair.

Mr McCarthy read about him due to the extensive coverage in the Standerton Advertiser and decided to give a wheelchair, used by his late wife, Charmaine,

This benefactor has expressed the hope of meeting Mr Petzer and that the wheelchair, once its use is obsolete, be returned to the newspaper.

“I can’t believe it, I am so glad,” Ms Petzer, his wife, said.

The wheelchair will be handed over as soon as possible.
