Youth forums discuss crime issues
Forum suggests pupils found roaming the streets wearing school uniforms should be arrested and sent back to school.
HIGHVELD – The office of the provincial commissioner, Mr Vusi Shongwe, organised a youth summit to draft a crime prevention framework.
The summit that was held in Middelburg from 29 to 31 July had representatives from junior station commanders of the police stations, directors with Youth Sub-forum Community Policing Forum (YSFCPF) chairman and secretary, various government departments, the National Prosecuting Authority and to the National Youth Development Agency.
All Mpumalanga police stations sent their youth representatives to the summit.
The issues discussed were crime prevention, rehabilitating ex-convicts and drug users.
Attendees were informed that they have to identify suspects and report them to the nearest police stations.
They were also asked to mobilise young people to participate in art, culture, sports and recreational activities with the aim of preventing crime.
Youth forums should have crime awareness campaigns in the communities.
Safety in schools was one of the burning issues raised during the summit and there was a proposal that pupils who are found roaming the streets wearing school uniforms, should be arrested and taken back to school.
Schools should also be provided with private security.
There was a request from the youth that more sports facilities should be created and made available, especially in townships and rural areas.
