Gruesome discovery of infant’s body in drain
A case of concealment of birth was opened at the eMbalenhle Police Station after the body of a baby was found in a drain.
eMBALENHLE – Residents of Extension 17 were shocked by the gruesome discovery of the body of an infant in a drain.
A resident said she was doing laundry when she saw the hand of an infant at 12pm on Tuesday, 18 August.
She summoned the police who came out, but said she had to inform the municipality, because they could not do anything.
“I was so shocked that I could not sleep, because the body was still in the drain.
“We thought the police where going to take the body out.”
Ms Egness Mazibuko, a resident, said it was not the first time that the body of an infant has been found in the drain.
“This is a shame to women.
“We urge the government to intervene and to address this issue in the area.”
Mr Bheki Kubheka, acting head of marketing and communication, said the municipality would like to appeal to the community to unite against this barbaric act of throwing babies and foetuses into municipal infrastructures or anywhere for that matter.
“Another baby was found by the municipality in a manhole during an investigation into the sewer blockage and this occurred three weeks after a foetus was found in Ext 16.
“This immoral act is unfair to our employees who are not prepared mentally to deal with such discoveries and in fact no one should have to deal with this.
“Everyone has a right to life in terms of section 11 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and these barbarians should be reminded of that for there is no justification for these acts.
“We request the community, churches and the Houses of Traditional Leadership to partner with the government in curbing gruesome activities by raising awareness.”
A case of concealment of birth was opened at the eMbalenhle Police Station and no one has been arrested yet.
Capt Magonseni Nkosi, police spokesman, said this is becoming a serious concern to the police and urged women who want to terminate pregnancies, to go to recognised legal institutions for help.
“Our government has offered free services for everybody who needs such services.
“As Women’s Month continues, we urge women to talk among themselves about this issue.”
