eMBALENHLE – Residents say gangsterism is a serious threat in the area and that the number of young people who identify themselves as gangsters, is increasing.
These alleged gangsters call themselves various names, such as Weshe, and the most popular one, Wrong Turns.
They are territorial and when people go to other sections, they are intimidated by these groups.
Mr Abraham Khwaza, chairman of the Man Voice and member of the Sector 3 CPF, said a number of residents have reported various incidents during which they have been tortured by the groups of gangsters.
He said these gangsters carry various weapons such as axes, pangas and other Shapiro objects which they use to intimidate the victims.
“Some areas are now known as no go areas after certain hours, as they are usually invaded by the alleged gangsters.
“They have established their own border posts and demand money when residents visit other sections.
“They also pick pocket people and steal personal belongings.”
A principal of a primary school who wanted to remain anonymous, confirmed this.
She said a group of about 14 pupils were recently late for school and when asked what the reason was, they told her they had to run away from the gangsters.
The Ridge Times interviewed the victimised people and they told this reporter their experiences with gangsters are life threatening and traumatic.
“We were coming to school when a red Tazz stopped next to us and those inside the car, swore at us.
“Realising that these people were dangerous, we ran for our lives but unfortunately they caught one of us,” said the pupil.
The pupil was allegedly beaten and put into the boot of the car.
“I was scared to death, I did not know what to think.
“I did not know why they were doing this to me.
“I am scared of going to school or to play outside,” said the victim.
He sustained bruises after being beaten by the gang.
The principal urged parents to stand up against these gangsters and urged the CPF to intervene.
Mr Khwaza said this can be defeated if all stakeholders such as the CPF, Sector Forum and police can intensify patrols in the area.
Capt Mangonseni Nkosi, police spokesmen, said they have received reports about the alleged gangsters and they are working around the clock to eradicate this.
“We recently arrested two of the alleged gangers aged 16 who stabbed another pupil in a gang fight.
“We urge parents to intervene and monitor their children’s behaviour and characters.”
