Thwala family in eSimendeni Section worried that wall might collapse
Mr Thwala said the wall collapsed during the night and they saw it the next morning.
A wall of a house in eSimendeni Section in Sakhile collapsed recently after it went up in flames earlier this year.
According to Mr Michael Thwala, family member, an electric fault started the fire.
He said his nephew, who is in his early 20s, stays alone in the house.
He was not injured in the blaze, but a large portion of the house was destroyed.
Mr Thwala said the ward councillor, Mr Elijah Shabangu, visited them after the incident.
“Ms Caroline Morajane, former Lekwa Municipal mayor, also visited them and said she would come back again, but she did not,” he said.
According to him the wall collapsed during the night and they only saw it the next morning.
The neighbour’s house is connected to the Thwala residence.
It was not damaged in the fire, but it looks like it is also going to collapse.
The Thwala family is worried, saying the wall of their neighbour’s house is not secure at all.
Altogether six people live in the yard including two children and all the adults are unemployed.
Mr Thwala stays with his wife and two children in a shack behind the main house that went up in flames.
His brother stays in his own shack as well, next to Mr Thwala’s shack.
“My nephews has since moved to the kitchen because it is the only part of the house that was not destroyed,” Mr Thwala said.
According to Mr Dumisani Hadebe of the Department of Human Settlements, they refer these type of cases to the provincial department.
He said it is the Emergency Housing Programme’s responsibility to fix houses that were destroyed in fires or by natural disasters.
According to him, the department repairs those houses, but it takes a while.
Ward 6 councillor, Mr Shabangu, could not be reached for a comment at the time of going to press.
