Bongani dies during mob justice in eMba
Vukanini Taxi Association denies being part of the mob that killed Mr Bongani Madonsela.
eMBALENHLE – The naked body of Mr Bongani Madonsela was lying at the former Engine Garage for more than five hours while the police were investigating his death.
Mr Madonsela was stripped naked and assaulted by a mob on Friday, 16 October.
He died on the scene and his friend sustained serious injuries.
He was fighting for his life in the Evander Hospital at the time of going to press.
It is alleged that the pair tried to rob a local taxi driver the day before and the next day a group of men searched for them and found them in Extension 17.
The two were transported to where they were assaulted next to the taxi rank at eMba Mall.
The police spent hours on the scene and took blood samples.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the mob included taxi drivers, however Mr Fanyana Sibanyoni, chairman of the Vukanini Taxi Association, disputed that and said nobody has prove that taxi drivers were involved in mob justice.
He said when he arrived on the scene, Mr Mandosela was already dead and there were no taxi drivers.
“We cannot say taxi drivers were involved without prove.”
Capt Magonseni Nkosi, police spokesman, condemned the killing of Mr Madonsela.
He said the police have intensified their investigation so that the perpetrators can be arrested.
“The culture of mob justice must come to an end.
“If people apprehend suspects, they must not take the law into their own hands but rather take the suspects to the police station.”
A man believed to be a friend of Mr Mandosela, picked up his clothes with anguish written on his face after the body was taken to the mortuary.
