Community members renovate elderly man’s house

The house was not destroyed in the fire even though some of the furniture was burnt in the blaze

A group of Sakhile residents recently gathered at an elderly man’s home to clean it up.

The community members decided to lend a helping hand after an article about a fire was published in the Standerton Ibis on 26 June.

The house went up in flames and the man, who stays alone, was admitted to hospital.

His neighbours saw that the house was on fire and extinguished it.

It is still unclear what caused the blaze that started in the bedroom.

The house was not destroyed even though some of the furniture was burnt.

The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) and the Standerton Taxi Association are also involved in fixing the house.

According to Mr Nicholas Selepe, Lekwa zonal convener, the existing structure can be repaired and there is no need to demolish the house.

He said the community members are cleaning the house and removing the burnt roof.

“We will replace the old roof and paint the inside walls.”

The owner of the house is currently not staying in the house, but lives with his sister.
