Clinic staff admit a shortage of nurses
Patients left unattended by the clinic staff.
LEBOHANG – Local patients of the Lebohang Clinic accuse the staff of neglecting them.
One of the women who gives out food to the patients at the clinic said she heard from her domestic worker who visits the clinic once a month, that some patients faint while they wait for a consultation.
The situation got out of hand again on Monday, 5 October when patients complained they were waiting in queues for more than four hours and were not unattended to.
“One of the nurses said they have a shortage of nurses and there is nothing they can do about it,” said a resident.
The TB section was not operating and patients had to return home.
The Ridge Times contacted the clinic and an employee admitted there is a staff shortage and that they have already informed the patients about the problem.
She also confirmed that the TB section was left unattended because the nurse who was supposed to be on duty, was on sick leave.
There are also allegations of people who are being turned away on a daily basis without being helped and that some end up dying at home and on benches.
The angry residents said they wanted the Department of Health to intervene because the issue of staff shortages is not new.
The newspaper contacted Ms Lydia Mnguni from Gert Sibande District who referred the reporter to the Provincial Department of Health.
They failed to comment after numerous attempts over the last month.
