Drought affects livestock

Government urge farmers to sell their livestock as the drought worsens.

LEANDRA – The hot and dry weather is hitting local farmers hard.

They are struggling to keep their livestock alive as the drought is worsening.

Dams have dried up and grazing fields can no longer feed the livestock.

Mr Petros Mnyakeni, a farmer, said the drought that began in February, has severely affected them and his animals are dying weekly.

He said farmers have to depend on the farm owner to help them with water that they have to buy.

“My animals are dying because there is no water and nothing to eat.”

Mr Mnyakeni said it is scary to imagine the future as the government is not promising any assistance to farmers.

“The way things are now, I do not have any source of income.

“This is a tough situation and we do not know where to find help.

“We are merely struggling to maintain our families.”

He said instead of the government helping them, they were urged to cut down the size of their herds.

“The forced selling of our livestock will hit us hard, especially those who use communal land and who cannot afford to give their animals feed supplements.”
