Fake herbalists to be exposed
Tradional leaders and healers warn people against fake herbalists.
eMBALENHLE – The House Traditional Leaders of the Nzuza Mabhoko Tribe have teamed up with the Traditional Healers Organisation to combat activities by illegal herbalists and traditional healers.
They held a meeting on Thursday, 12 November at the Sasol Recreation Club that was initiated by traditional leaders to seek clarity about the escalating number of traditional healers in the area.
Traditional leaders said they are concerned about the high number of people who distribute pamphlets of traditional healers who claim they can enlarge penises, provide luck with the lotto, and many other promises.
Mr Isaack Mahlangu, chief, said by the look of things people are conned by fake herbalists.
“If they claim they are traditional healers and can help people, why do they include things such as abortions in their practices?
“We want to know whether they are registered or not.
“It is our responsibility to preserve our culture and traditional healing is part of it.
“However today you find people selling muti on every corner.
“They might be misleading people.”
Ms Triphinah Mkhonza, chairman of the Traditional Healers Organisation, distanced her organisation from these activities.
“Our organisation trains and certifies traditional health practitioners and fights for members’ rights to practice traditional healing.
“We also ensure quality of treatment, efficacy, safety and ethical standards of member practitioners.
“What we see in the area is a shame, because people are conning residents and must be dealt with.”
They agreed to have a meeting with other stakeholders, such as the police and the Department of Health, to come up with solutions.
