Illegal miners out in open

Residents feels that the police and mine are not doing anything about Zama - zamas.

SECUNDA – Concerned motorists and residents have raised their outrage over illegal miners invading public spaces.

Illegal miners are now mining openly and are using the Secunda to eMbalenhle Road that passes Graceland.

They operate on the Winkelhaak Mine side.

Motorists said the illegal miners intimidate them at night and residents of Muzimuhle Village are living in fear.

“We often hear gunshots at night.”

Some resident were relocated to a hostel after illegal miners were allegedly breaking into and vandalising their homes.

“The situation is terrifying and dangerous, especially to our children.

“These people can be cruel if they want to.

“At one time I was sleeping in my house when I heard a window breaking.

“I went out see what was happening and a group of men wearing Basotho blankets were chanting and swearing.

“I called the security, but the Basotho’s fired shots at them.

“I had to ask the mine to move me out of the house for my own safety,” said one of the victims.

Residents of Muzimuhle said they were without electricity for weeks after illegal miners allegedly burnt down a transformer.

They are confused why the police and mine security are not doing anything about this.

“It looks as though illegal mining has become legal.”

At times they even gain access to the Evander Gold Mine.

Five illegal miners were rescued and arrested at the Evander Gold Mine in June.

According to the police, the illegal miners illegally gained access to the mine in May.

It is alleged that they rented access cards from mine employees.

Lt Bettinah Zondo, police spokesman, said the Secunda Police will enhance patrols in the area.

She urged motorists and residents to be cautious when driving or walking in the area.
