General worker becomes teacher
“When I began working at the school I did not have a matric certificate, I had only passed Grade 8,”
Ms Busisiwe Vilakazi (Maseko) has recently obtained her qualification as a teacher from the North-West University.
The 50-year-old mother of two is employed at Thobelani Secondary School as a general worker.
“When I began working at the school in 2005, I did not have a matric certificate, I had only passed Grade 8,” Ms Vilakazi said.
According to her, she decided to go back to school in 2009.
She said she registered for the Adult Based Education and began at level 3.
“I then proceeded to level 4 the following year,” Ms Vilakazi also said.
She registered for her senior certificate in 2011 and did three subjects.
In order to obtain her matric certificate she needed to do four subjects.
“I did the last four subjects in 2012 and received my senior certificate.”
According to Ms Vilakazi, after obtaining her senior certificate her colleagues encouraged her to study further.
She enrolled at the North-West University for a Diploma in Education in 2013.
“Finding a balance between my school work, my personal life and my job was not easy.”
According to her, she persevered because she always wanted to be qualified in something.
She thanked Mr Dannie Ngwenya, Thobelani Secondary School’s principal, for his support.
Ms Vilakazi said her family is proud of her achievement, especially her children.
She has begun applying for vacant positions at different schools and already enrolled for an advance certificate in education for next year.
Ms Vilakazi believes that she will be an asset in the basic education field.
She encouraged the public to never give up on their dreams.
“Education is important and it gives you options,” she said.
