Residents of Trichardt and parts of Secunda were again without electricity due to a problem at the main substation in Trichardt which supply the affected areas with electricity.

The main problem was a busbar that burned out out left people in the dark from 30 November to 1 December.

In electrical power distribution, a busbar is a metallic strip or bar (typically copper, brass or aluminium) that conducts electricity within a switchboard, distribution board, substation, battery bank or other electrical apparatus.

Its main purpose is to conduct a substantial current of electricity and not to function as a structural member.

Busbars may or may not be enclosed in a bus duct.

The cause of this could be due to the fact that maintenance is not done regularly.

Trichardt, Secunda Extension 22 and 23, the Secunda Mall and Terranova were affected.

A team of technicians and electricians fixed the problem and was trying to restore power.

“The municipality sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused by this unfortunate event,” said Mr Bheki Kubheka, Govan Mbeki Municipal spokesman.
