Suspicious activity at Amakosi Scrap Yard

The container was not completely destroyed, but some of the property inside was burnt

A container was set alight at Amakosi Scrap Yard in Meyerville.

According to the owners, they made the discovery upon arrival on 12 January.

The container was not completely destroyed, but some of the property inside was burnt.

Messrs David Sibanyoni and Joseph Lephoane, the owners, said the person who tried to burn the container poured petrol inside the container.

“We could smell the petrol when opening the container,” Mr Sibanyoni said.

He also said they found a driver’s licence of an unknown man when investigating the area.

‘’We suspect the licence belongs to the person who burnt our property,’’ Mr Sibanyoni said.

They said not much was destroyed, but are worried that this person might return.

According to them, they called the police after making the discovery, but they did not arrive.

According to the Standerton Police, they went to investigate on 12 January, but found nobody at the premises.

This is not the first time the property goes up in flames.

Fire destroyed conveyor belts worth a substantial amount of money and the Standerton Ibis reported on the matter on 19 June last year.

The owners said the conveyor belts did not belong to them and struggled to get hold of the rightful owner to inform him.

According to them, no case was opened with the police because the owner of the conveyor belts was nowhere to be found.

It is still not clear what caused the fire that destroyed the conveyor belts.
