How you can help reduce the fatality statistics
A total of 31 incidents were reported at the Department of Fire Rescue and Disaster Management from 1 to 31 December last year.
According to the department, this number has increased from 22 in 2014.
There were less car accidents that were reported last year as compared to 2014.
Only 12 accidents occurred last year and 14 were reported in 2014.
There were more fatalities that occurred last year with five people dying in these accidents.
Eight fire incident were reported, seven house fires and one vehicle fire.
Two chemical spills were reported to the department.
Three pedestrians were hit by vehicles and there was only one fatality. There was only one case of drowning that was reported.
The department has provided safety tips for the community.
Motorists
• Make sure your vehicle is roadworthy
• Keep a safe following distance
• Rest every two hours or when you feel tired
• Do not exceed the speed limits
Pedestrians
• Make sure it is safe to cross the road before doing so
• Children must be accompanied by adults
• Cross only in a demarcated area
Fireworks dealers
• Please apply for a Fire Safety Certificate and Licence to deal with fireworks on time to avoid disappointment
• Dealing with fireworks without licence may result in your stock being confiscated or paying a fine
Households
• Keep matches and flammable liquids away from children’s reach
• Do not overload electrical appliances
• Switch off all electrical appliances that may cause fire before going to sleep
• Make sure candles are properly snuffed (adult supervision )
The department urged the community not to ignore these tips.
