Sasol hosts 21st annual Sasol Grade 12 merit awards
Many school in the district have performed above average and was awarded by Sasol.
SECUNDA – Sasol in partnership with the Osizweni Science and Education Centre and Proconics, hosted the 21st annual Sasol Grade 12 Merit Award ceremony on Friday, 15 January at Sasol Club.
This was to recognise top achieving pupils in the Govan Mbeki municipal area, Standerton Sub-Region and the Lekwa and Dipaleseng municipal areas.
These are matriculants who obtained three or more distinctions in their final Grade 12 examinations.
Altogether 94 merit awards were awarded to pupils and cash prizes were given to those with outstanding results.
The pupils received between three and seven distinctions.
The overall top achiever of the evening was Miranda Potgieter from Hoërskool Standerton who received seven distinctions last year.
About 17 teachers were also recognised at the awards ceremony.
For the second consecutive year, Sasol recognised 25 pupils from Quintile 1 to 3 graded schools who achieved top marks in mathematics and physical science in the Govan Mbeki Lekwa and Dipaleseng municipal areas.
Each pupil received R15 000 to be used towards their registration fee at a tertiary institution of their choice.
Sasol sponsored programmes at Quintile 4 schools in those municipal areas.
The senior vice president of Sasol Chemicals Operations, Mr Marinus Sieberhagen, said: “Sasol is proud to play a role in facilitating access to education to aspiring pupils in Mpumalanga.
“In addition to being part of this awards ceremony, Sasol offers one of the best bursary programmes in the country aimed at increasing South Africa’s engineering and technology skills pool.
“In 2015 alone, Sasol awarded bursaries to 62 pupils from the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
“We remain committed to supporting the Department of Education and the community in their efforts to produce quality future leaders.”
The Sasol annual Grade12 Merit Award ceremony is an initiative in support of the objectives of Government’s National Development Plan which aims to uplift communities.
