13-year-old drowns in Standerton

The body was located within approximately 15 seconds of the divers entering the water.

Divers recovered the body of a 13-year-old from Scorpion Dam in Mahalah Park, Standerton yesterday morning (October 24).

The boy drowned the previous day.

Delta 1 Rescue Diving and the Mpumalanga Inland Water Police (MIWP) received a call from the Standerton SAPS and Kasselman Security late on Friday about the drowning.

Concerns regarding limited visibility and the unfamiliar area, which could present potential hazards to the divers, the divers attended to the scene early the next morning.

The Delta 1 Rescue team assessed the area. The location was identified and pointed out by members of the public who were present at the scene.

The team entered the water and successfully located and recovered the body at a depth of about 3 metres. The body was located within approximately 15 seconds of the divers entering the water.

An inquest has been opened by Standerton SAPS, and further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is underway.
