Rooikoppen residents found themselves in a compromising situation on 1 April after a sewage spill forced them to move their furniture outside.
According to Ms Francina Radebe, a resident, her son told her that there was dirty smelly water at the tap.
“I went to investigate and discovered that raw sewage was overflowing from the drain outside and in the toilet inside the house,” Ms Radebe said.
She also said she called her husband, Mr Thabo Moloi, who was at work and informed him.
“I opened one off the sewerage pipes behind the toilet so that the sewage will stop spilling inside the toilet,” Mr Moloi said.
He then called the Lekwa Municipality to report what had happened and asked for assistance.
According to him, a municipal employee told him that there is a contractor working on all the sewage issues in Rooikoppen and they will fix the problem.
After reporting the matter to the municipality Mr Moloi discovered that his neighbour, Ms Zandile Ndlovu, had the same problem and the manhole in one of his neighbour’s yard was blocked.

Mr Moloi also opened a sewerage pipe behind Ms Ndlovu’s toilet and the sewage immediately stopped spilling inside the house.
He called the municipality again and was told that the contractor will deal with the matter.
“I walked to where the contractor is stationed to ask for assistance, but did not get any help,” Mr Moloi said.
According to him, the contractor failed to help him and told him that they are only going to replace pipes, not fix sewage spills.
“They told me that the municipality must intervene,” Mr Moloi said.
He also said he called the municipality again and was told that the contractor has to do repairs.
Mr Moloi spent R40 on airtime calling the municipality, to no avail.
He also tried to unblock a blocked manhole with the assistance of his neighbours.
The municipality did not comment at the time of going to press.
