Leandra residents without transport

A meeting was held in Secunda to resolve the issue.

LEBOHANG – Residents woke up without having transport to go to work and children did not go to school after all the roads were blocked by taxis.

No vehicles coming from Kinross and Devon are allowed to pass through Leandra.

Residents urged the relevant departments to intervene, because they are greatly affected by the closure of the roads.

Some are hoping that after all protest and the closures of the roads, they will be able to have Leandra taxis operating in all areas of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, because they always struggle with transport.

“Every time we go to Secunda, we have to take a bus or hike, because Leandra taxis are not allowed to drop people off in Secunda,” said a resident this morning.

The chairman of Zamokuhle Taxi Association could not be reached for comment, but the Ridge Times was informed by some of the taxi operators that they are demanding an answer from the office of the MEC of Public Works, Road and Transport.

It was further mentioned that a meeting was held in Secunda to resolve the issue.

The Regulation and Control office of the Department of Public Works, Road and Transport said they are aware of the closure of roads in Leandra and are going to resolve the issue.

They also said they are going to involve the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison to ensure that the roads are opened.

W/O Khuselwa Matrose from Leandra Police Station confirmed that the roads are closed, but that the situation is calm.
