Mr Bosman Grobler, DA Whip in the Provincial Legislature, recently delivered a motion without notice during a sitting of the legislature in Lekwa.
The programme, “Taking Legislature to the People” (TLP) aimed at giving members of the legislature first-hand information on service delivery issues.
The DA condemned the ANC’s alleged tactic of ‘cleaning up’ and finding ‘quick fixes’ to the issues which affects communities whenever the programme is conducted,
Mr Grobler said communities in Standerton have been up in arms fighting against the pollution of the Vaal River since 2009 and referred to the DA’s inspection on site.
According to him, party members were appalled at the smell of the treatment plant and the state of the river only to find that three weeks later the river was ‘clean’ and the Water Treatment Plant smelled as if it was functioning.
“The motion was defeated and consequently the above recommendations will not be prioritised,” Mr Bosman also said.
The procedure when delivering a motion without notice, does not include any debate.
Ms Thobeka Mtshiselwa, communications manager for the Lekwa Municipality, responded: “The municipality does not agree with the statement.
“It has to be noted that the municipality is providing services to the community on daily basis and has it’s programme of action for the provision of services.
“Therefore the municipality didn’t do any quick fixes during the TLP.”
