A pedestrian died after he was run over by a car between Bethal and Morgenzon.

According to the Morgenzon Police, the motorist claimed he did not see the pedestrian.

“He said he heard a loud noise and the windscreen broke immediately,” Const Melumuzi Nzimande, communications officer of the Morgenzon Police, said.

According to the police, the motorist stopped 4km away from where the incident occurred, but did not get out of his vehicle to investigate.

Apparently he was waiting for the police to arrive on the scene.

A truck driver saw the man lying on the road motionless and notified the police.

Const Nzimande confirmed that the pedestrian died on the scene.

The driver was arrested and a case of culpable homicide was opened.

He was later released on a warning.

However, he is due to appear in the Morgenzon Magistrate’s Court on 15 November.

The police did not release the name of the deceased because his family has not been notified.
