Four robbers targeted one of the well-known wholesalers at the Oriental Plaza on 29 October.

The suspects robbed the business and shot Mr Riyaad Omar, manager at Gani’s Shop.

He was working, helping customers at the till when the robbers struck.

“I heard a sound and looked to my left and saw one of the suspects pointing a gun at my father,” Mr Omar said.

He said another man with a bag was removing money from the till.

The third suspect was inside the shop, while the fourth one was waiting in the getaway vehicle.

The man with the bag then moved to the till where Mr Omar was.

“I had my hands up as a sign of surrender and told him to take everything and even gave him the key to the other till.”

However, the man with the gun shot him in the chest.

According to him, the bullet hit the scale they use to weigh coins and split into two pieces before it hit him.

“I did not feel anything and only realised I was shot when I noticed my t-shirt was wet,” Mr Omar said.

The man with the gun ran out after the shooting, while the other suspect used the bag to try and get more money.

“When they all left the shop, I chased after them and fired about 14 shots at the getaway vehicle,” he said. According to Mr Omar, one of the customers, whose wallet was stolen during the robbery, also came out of the shop and fired shots at the vehicle.

When he walked back to the shop Mr Omar was covered in blood.

Mr Naaem Bhabha, a friend, rushed him to the doctor.
