eMBALENHLE – Mr Elphus (Ace) Vilakazi, an ANC councillor, was recently hijacked in Extension 19.
He said he returned from Newcastle at about 8pm when he was confronted by hijackers.
Mr Vilakazi said a car stopped in front of him and when he got out of his car to talk to the driver, two men got out of another car that had stopped behind his car.
They pointed guns at him and ordered him out of his car.
“They drove with me to a veld in Roodebank, where they tied me with a rope and assaulted me.
“I sustained minor injuries to my left hand where they hit me with a gun.”
Mr Vilakazi said he is lucky to be alive as the men were armed with pistols.
All his personal belongings, including a large amount of money, driver’s licence, identity document and a camera were stolen.
However his car was later found in Zonkizizwe (Zonke) Informal Settlement in the south of Johannesburg close to Germiston.
Mr Vilakazi praised the police for helping him and warned people to be cautious when they drive at night.
Sgt Sibusiso Mbuli, police spokesman, called on the public to be always alert when driving this festive, as hijacking usually increases.
He said police will continue with their investigations.
A suspect who was found in possession of the stolen car, was arrested and will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on 18 November.
