HIGHVELD – Though they offered a substantial reward, the Highveld Ridge SPCA is no closer to finding the person responsible for one of the worst cases of animal cruelty in the society’s history.
The SPCA was called out to Ext 11 in eMbalenhle by the police, after a group of children had found a severely injured dog on 19 November.
The dog had a piece of zipper tied round her neck which was so tight, it had nearly decapitated her as she struggled to get free.
Due to the severe suffering of the animal and the extent of the injuries, the SPCA had to euthanise her, and opened a case of animal cruelty.
The community came out in support of the SPCA on social media and contributed to a reward fund for information that would lead to an arrest.
To date, no one has come forward with any information.
Ms Jenneth Geel, senior inspector, expressed her frustrating: “We work in the area where this dog was found on a regular basis and the community knows that they can come to us with problems, but we seem to have hit a dead end.”
She explained that the animal might have been dumped in Ext 11 during the night and was left to die, and that could be why no one knows where it comes from or who did this to her.
“Though we have no leads yet, the case will remain open for now as we take this type of animal cruelty very serious.
“Any person who might know who is responsible, can feel free to give us a call and if they choose to remain anonymous, we will support them.”
At present there is a cash reward or R4 500 for any information that will lead to an arrest.
