The Lekwa Municipality officially handed over toilets in the informal settlements in Ward 3 on 10 January.
Ms Mapaseka Molaba, Ward 3 councillor (Chief Whip), addressed the community and said the municipality has not forgotten about them.
According to her, they are working hard to ensure that informal settlements dwellers have access to services, such as water, sanitation and electricity.
“We want to restore people’s dignity, they do not have to go to the bushes to relieve themselves anymore,” Ms Molaba said.
These toilets are situated in two containers with each container containing five toilets, five basins and five mirrors.
Ms Molaba discouraged vandalism, saying it is everyone’s responsibility to look after the toilets.
Ms Banana Mollo, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) of Technical Services, echoed the same sentiments.
After officially opening the toilets the residents were given a chance to view them.
“I am grateful that the municipality has provided us with toilets because water and sanitation are important,” Ms Lettie Msimanga, a resident, said.
According to Ms Molaba, they are working towards eradicating informal settlements, but that does not mean that the people living in informal settlements should not receive any municipal services.
