Residents have raised concerns about the funds used to upgrade the sport facilities in Sakhile, saying the Lekwa Municipality could have used the money to pay the Eskom debt.
Eskom’s announcement about the electrical supply interruptions due to non-payment got tongues wagging, with people saying the debt is an emergency as opposed to refurbishing sport facilities.
The municipality has broken the silence and spoke out about the project that got residents up in arms.
According to them, the project is a Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) project funded through Sports and Recreation South Africa (SRSA).
They said the MIG is a conditional grant ring-fenced for implementation of capital infrastructure projects, and in this case the condition is the refurbishment and upgrading of the Sakhile Sports Precinct.
Projects that are in the pipeline, but not funded by the municipality
• Upgrade of R23 (Sanral)
• Upgrade of R50 (Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport)
• Rehabilitation of portions of the Sakhile electrical network (Sasol)
• Refurbishment and upgrade of bulk water supply lines to Square reservoir and Standerton Ext 8, including commissioning of the 10 ML reservoir (Department of Human Settlements)
• Bulk electrical infrastructure installation for Standerton Ext 8 (Department of Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs).
• Upgrade of Sakhile receiving substation (Gert Sibande District Municipality)
