eMBALENHLE – A gang believed to have been terrorising the area and committing various crimes, including murder and business robberies, was arrested recently.
This came after a man was shot and killed while he was on his way to catch a bus for work in December.
Police’s investigation led to the arrest of the five gangsters.
The police’s task team, comprising Vispol eMbalenhle and Secunda and National Crime Intelligence Units, intensified the investigation that led to the arrest of another two suspects.
A firearm was recovered during the arrest.
The five Lesotho foreign nationals and two locals, including the man believed to have been the mastermind behind the gang, appeared in Evander Magistrate’s Court recently and their case was postponed to 6 February.
Capt Magonseni Nkosi, police spokesman, commended the joint effort of the police members.
He said if it had not been for their unity in the fight against crime, Messrs Sdumo Pemba, Tankiso Morie, Thato Damane, Thabiso Ramabe, Lefa Mahashole, Samkele Mnyamane and Kgotso Thokoa would not have been arrested.
“These suspects have committed serious crimes, such as arson, murder, attempted murder and robbery.
“This is a breakthrough for us and we believe locals will now be at peace.
“We believe further investigation will link the suspects to unresolved cases in and around the area.”
Capt Nkosi said the police are investigating whether the suspects were linked to the Amcu strike.
