There are allegations that the Lekwa Municipality awarded Mr Nhlanhla Tshabalala a bursary before the actual closing date for the applications, which was 27 January.
These allegations were stated in a letter a concerned resident wrote to the Standerton Advertiser recently.
According to the letter, Mr Howard Vilakazi, manager in the officer of the mayor, allegedly wrote a letter to the Durban University of Technology, confirming that the municipality has awarded the alleged bursary recipient a bursary.
It further said that the municipality committed to pay a R3 500 registration fee and requested the institution to register him.
The resident questioned the credibility of the bursary committee, saying the bursaries are awarded to Xhosa speaking people, while the municipality is dominated by Isizulu and Sesotho speaking residents.
According to the concerned citizen, Mr Linda Dhlamini, Lekwa mayor, and Mr Sikhumbuzo Radebe, Lekwa youth officer, are corrupt.
Apparently Mr Dhlamini used the municipality’s resources to buy seven laptops for a school in Msukaligwa Municipality.
