eMBALENHLE – “We are not a cure for HIV and Aids” and “We are tired of uncles who rape us”.
These were some of the messages written on placards that were lifted up by children of Ext 18 during a community meeting.
They called on the community to picket at Evander Magistrate’s Court to oppose an alleged rapist’s bail application.
This came after a five-year-old child was raped in December.
It is alleged the kid was taken by the man who told he was going to buy her chips.
Her family realised she was missing and searched for her.
They were told the child was last seen with the suspect.
The family and the community went to the man’s house, but were denied access.
A relative of the man was later seen with the child in the street.
The community apprehended him and he allegedly confessed that the child was raped by his nephew.
They found the suspect and took him to the police station.
The community meeting was held to discuss crime in the area.
Mr Sihlalo, community leader, called on residents to unite and fight crime.
He said it should be the responsibility of every adult and men to protect women and children.
