Welcome rain, but worrisome effects

With the large amount of rain that many towns have been experiencing recently, Standerton has not been spared and the authorities had to act swiftly to ensure that all residents are safe on 21 February.

The Department of Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management had to close the bridge in Walter Sisulu Drive after the police reported the overflow of water in the area.

As a result, motorists making their way to and from the industrial area, Sakhile, Sharpeville, Azalea and Stanwest, had to use an alternative route.

“The local traffic officers assisted in directing motorists to the alternative route which was the R23 towards Johannesburg,” Mr Jabulani Mkhwanazi of the Department of Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management said.

According to him, a Joint Operation Committee (Joc) met twice on 22 February to discuss the dam levels, and prepare for a flood so they can quickly respond if need be.

The members of the Joc include the Chief of Fire and Disaster Management, the police, ambulance services, hospital, the Department of Correctional Services, the local traffic department, provincial traffic department and security companies just to name a few.
