Dr Mudau pampers senior citizens
"I hope that my story and involvement in the community encourages others to do good in the community."
Carolina optometrist Dr Lucas Mudau celebrated his 41st birthday by pampering senior citizens of Khanyisa Care Centre in Silobela last Thursday.
Speaking for the members at the centre, gogo Cathrine Khatha said they were grateful to Dr Mudau and his wife for taking time to spend the day with them and for everything that he had done for the elderly of Silobela and Carolina.
Ms T.M. Mashibini of Khanyisa Care Centre also thanked the couple for choosing them this year and also wished them well.
Dr Mudau arrived in Carolina in 1998 and is no stranger to community work. In previous years he always made sure that his big day was spent with and giving to the needy and less fortunate.
During his short speech, he explained how he wanted to leave Carolina, because he felt misplaced and how many of his colleagues had come and left. But after some soul searching and spiritual growth, he came to realise that his work was nowhere near being done and since then, he has never looked back.
Some of the community work he is involved in includes quarterly motivational talks with schools in Silobela, Carolina and Machadodorp where he motivates Grade 8 to Grade 12 learners.
His foundation, which will be launched soon, has financially assisted academically deserving learners in taking them to institutions of highers learning. He is also a role model to many young people in the area, including Sphiwe Hlophe of Zinikeleni Secondary School in Silobela who suffered third degree burns to his face and fingers when a blanket
caught fire from an imbawula (a makeshift coal stove made out of a large tin with holes on the side).
He said one of the reasons he enjoys spending time with the elderly is because of his childhood where he was raised by his aunt and grandmother. He said his grandmother has always been a spiritual pillar of their family who always prayed for every member of the family.
“I hope that my story and involvement in the community encourages others to do good in the community and I hope that others who look up to me will realise that anything is possible if you remain focused, true to yourself, follow your heart and believe in the Almighty with whom all is possible,” said Dr Mudau.
As usual, he brought gift packs for the 25 members at the centre, which included a blanket, T-shirt, socks, morning shoes for the gogos and sneakers for the mkhulus.
