Secunda senior citizens celebrate 39th birthday

Chairman says there is no age limit to who may join the club and reminded local senior citizens that both Afrikaans and English speaking seniors are welcome.

SECUNDA – Living a purposeful life regardless of your age, is a blessing as much as it is a responsibility.

The Secunda Senior Citizens’ Club provides a platform for such a life.

The club celebrated its 39th birthday on Wednesday, 22 February.

With more than 40 permanent members, it has grown over the years to become a close-knit group that offers friendship, support and motivation.

According to Ms Pam Kotze, chairman of the club, they also take pride in being a group that chooses to give back to the community.

“We believe age alone does not mean you can no longer be a worthy contributor to the lives of those around you, and as a club we often have collections and fundraisers for different local charities.”

Ms Joyce van der Walt, one of the members who have been with the club the longest, said the club allows her to be part of something fun and uplifting and she particularly enjoys the social part of the club.

“Being a member of the club, keeps my involved and helps my mind stay clear.

“I am always excited about the meetings and usually can not wait for the next one.

“I am definitely very happy here and I enjoy the communication.

“I am actually an extrovert, so this club offers me the opportunity to go on outings, meet people and have interesting experiences.

“I am very happy here and I would advise anyone to join the club.”

Two other members, Mr Jan and Ms Marie Pretorius, joined the club more than 10 years ago when they moved to Secunda.

“We had a wonderful group of friends and a support network in our previous town, so we made a conscious decision to become involved and build up a similar type of social circle in Secunda,” explained Mr Pretorius.

“It has always been important for us to be involved in our community and we would encourage anyone to become a member of this club, or any organisation that provides you with a social and emotional support network.”

Ms Kotze said there is no age limit to who may join the club and reminded local senior citizens that both Afrikaans and English speaking seniors are welcome.

“Do not wait for a certain age before you join.

“Come to us the moment you feel you can benefit from joining our activities, whether you are 40 or 90.”
