Robber pretends to be police officer opposite Secunda Mall

"We urge the community to be very careful and not to get into strangers’ vehicles."

SECUNDA – A woman was robbed opposite the Secunda Mall on Thursday, 23 February.

The local police said she was about to cross the road to the mall when she was confronted by the alleged robber who pretended to be a police officer.

He told the woman he was looking for a woman who has robbed another woman at the post office.

He requested her to get into his vehicle and they drove to the parking area.

Capt Battinah Zondo said the suspect asked the woman what was in her bag.

“She showed him her ID and bank cards.

“He asked to see her credit cards and wanted her to confirm that the bank cards were hers by telling him the pin codes.

“She did as requested and he released her.”

The woman received an SMS that R2 000 was withdrawn from her account after a few minutes.

She discovered that her bank card was not stolen.

Capt Zondo said this was not the first incident of this kind of robbery.

“We urge the community to be very careful and not to get into strangers’ vehicles.

“People must be careful of robberies taking place next to the mall.”

Capt Zondo said the police are working around the clock to deal with crime in the area.

The suspect is still at large.
