Mr Bafana Sithole, an inmate from the Standerton Correctional Service Centre, recently visited Jandrell Secondary School.
He took to the podium and addressed the learners on how their choices of today can affect their future.
According to him, bad choices landed him behind bars.
Mr Sithole condemned the use of illegal substances, saying it destroys lives.
According to him, most people begin doing drugs occasionally and struggle to stop when they do not want to use it anymore.
He also said peer pressure plays a role and some young people even go to school under the influence of substances.
“As a result, they do not learn anything that is being taught,” Mr Sithole said.
Mr Sithole urged the learners to make good choices now that will have a positive impact on their future.
Other speakers echoed the same sentiments and said the learners must choose to be positive and not negative.
Pastor MJ Mahlangu requested the learners not to only attend school, but to learn what they are taught.
He said learners must associate themselves with people who have a positive influence in their lives.
“Associate yourself with people who will influence you to study and not to steal,” Mr Mahlangu said
