HIGHVELD – Govan Mbeki Municipality is continuing to disconnect the power and water supply to consumers who owe the municipality for services.
They embarked on a debt collection operation called Koleka Di Koloto (Kodiko), to disconnect electricity and cut the water supply to businesses that are not paying their municipal accounts.
The operation is ongoing and the next phase will involve cutting electricity and restricting water to households that owe the municipal.
Consumers are encouraged to pay their outstanding accounts to avoid cut offs.
The non-payment of municipal services has a direct adverse impact on service delivery.
Ms Flora Maboa-Boltman, executive mayor, said the goal of the project is to ensure Council has the money to pay the Eskom debt and to reduce losses in the municipality.
She said the public must take responsibility and pay their services.
“The municipality must be self sustained and the only way to reach that is for people to pay for the services they are receiving.
“This will improve service delivery.
“I advise those who owe us money, to pay up because I did not send the officials out to negotiate, but to cut the electricity.”
