HIGHVELD – A scam victim warned locals about deceitful prophets operating in the Govan Mbeki Municipal area.
She was on her way to Secunda Mall when two men approached and smeared her with some form of traditional medicine.
A woman confronted her and claimed she was a prophet and was willing to help her.
“She told me what has been smeared to me, was muti for bad luck.
“She began to speak in a strange language and suggested we go to a quiet place where she can pray for me.
“I followed her, but was feeling dizzy and confused.”
The woman convincingly informed her about her financial challenges, relationships and other social problems.
“I was very scared and I believe I was hypnotised.
“She demanded my bank card and pin numbers and I gave them to her.
“They took my cell phone, money and other belonging and left me.”
The victim said she is still traumatised and urged people not to trust strangers and to watch out for fake prophets.
Capt Bettina Zondo, Secunda Police spokesman, confirmed cases regarding criminals who pretend to be prophets, were opened.
“Though the reported cases are not exactly the same as this victim’s, the similarity is that they both pretended to be prophets.
“We are calling on the public to be more careful and not to be deceived by criminals who pretend to be prophets.
“If people feel they need prayers, they must go to legit places of worship.”
