Man who was hit by train was apparently deaf

“The man died on the scene and was taken to the state mortuary”

Mr BD Mtshali died after he was hit by a train on the Meyerville Bridge on 22 March.

According to the police, the train driver said he tried in vain to warn Mr Mtshali, but he did not get off the railway track.

Capt Fanie Nhlabathi, communications officer for the Standerton Police said Mr Mtshali died on the scene.

According to him, the deceased’s family later confirmed that Mr Mtshali was deaf, as a result he did not hear the warning.

Mr John Kock, of the Department of Fire Rescue and Disaster Management, the Emergency Medical Services informed them about the incident.

The Standerton Police have opened an inquest case.

The Standerton Police, Transnet, the Department of Fire Rescue and Disaster Management, emergency services and the Forensic Pathology Services were on the scene.
