Local boytjie, Erin Brouwer participates in South African Junior Athletics Championship

“You need to move fast and also have strength,” he said.

The 13-year-old Erin Brouwer has represented his school in shot-put at the South African Junior Athletics Championship in Potchefstroom from 22 March to 25 March, making it his fourth appearance at such an event.

The close-knit Brouwer family, consisting of father, Marc, and mother, Lorette, and twin brothers, Nathan and Damian, accompanied him to watch his performance where he ended in the sixth place with a respectable distance of 13,28cm.

“His father is his biggest critic and also his biggest fan,” Ms Brouwer said.

Erin began training in Grade 4 while still at Laerskool Standerton and this Grade 8 learner at Hoërskool Standerton now also takes part in discus, plays prop for the first and second rugby team and even used to play hockey at primary school level.

He acknowledged that one has to be fit to compete in shot-put.

“You need to move fast and also have strength,” he said.
