DA will write to MEC Mr Speedy Mashilo

The party alleged that there are still massive infrastructural shortfalls in the area and said the ANC government continues to fail the community

The DA has released a statement after Mr James Masango, provincial leader, visited Ext 8 during an oversight visit to Standerton on 6 April.

The Standerton Advertiser published an article on 21 April about the living condition in the area.

According to the DA, they will write to Mr Speedy Mashilo, MEC of the Department of Human Settlement, to request a time-frame on when proper functioning infrastructure will be put in place since the people in Ext 8 are living in horrendous conditions.

The party alleged that there are still massive infrastructural shortfalls in the area and said the ANC government continues to fail the community.

Mr James Masango engages with the Ext 8 community during an oversight visit to Standerton.

The DA discovered that four years after 500 housing units were built in Ext 8, the Lekwa Municipality is yet to implement proper infrastructure and ensure adequate service delivery.

This has left Standerton residents exposed to potential communicable diseases because of a lack of electricity, running water and a proper sewerage system.

The dignity of these residents has been stripped away as they are forced to flush their toilets through blocked drain pits or use a nearby bush to relieve themselves because they only receive water once a week that could ultimately lead to an outbreak of diseases such as typhoid and cholera.
